Typecasting Quickie: David Anders (Vampire Diaries)

Has David Anders ever played a character who wasn't bad? At the least, he's just a prick, at the most, he's an uber-villain.

We just watched him in the season premiere of The Vampire Diaries last night and it occured to me that the poor guy has been typecast!

Actually I take back that "poor guy" thing... because it's an awesome typecasting and he rocks it. But still.

Anders was on two of my all time favorite shows before joining the cast of The Vampire Diaries...

He played bad ass spy Julian Sark on Alias opposite Jennifer Garner and then more recently the immortal villain Adam Monroe on Heroes. (He was also on 24 as Josef Bazhaev, but I never really watched past the first season so I don't know much about his character . Apparently he was part of some deal to sell nuclear rods? Dunno. Seems kinda bad ass to me.)

Despite his recent departure from The Vampire Diaries, I suspect we haven't completely seen the end of John Gilbert just yet. But I'm definitely looking forward to where he will pop up as a villain next!

Missed last night's episode?

Watch it now

I actually found him to be a little sympathetic in this role. Let's face it, vampires kill humans and see humans as food no matter how much we are lead to like the Salvatore Brothers. I agree we have not seen the last of them because I believe that this season is going to be far more dark than last season. It seems as though they are going to move to a much more grown up show thus leaving behind much of the teen angst.

Yeah, he's definitely not as much of a... well... an asshole in Vampire Diaries as he has been in the past shows. But the minute he showed up last season you automatically knew he was going to be trouble, because of who he is. In cases like that typecasting is more like stuntcasting... but it worked!
